Clark Realty Capital Earns Top Honors at Monument Awards Gala
Virginia Projects Recognized as Best Mixed-Use Design, Mid-Rise Rental Community, and Residential Historic Renovation
Bethesda, Md. — Clark Realty Capital was honored with three awards at the 2006 Monument Awards Gala held on Thursday, November 2, 2006. The annual event is sponsored by both the Northern Virginia Building Industry Association and the Maryland - National Capital Building Association. For over four decades, these organizations have recognized area communities that represent the finest the building industry has to offer. # # #
The Monument Awards honored several of Clark Realty Capital's local projects for impeccable design and planning. The Villages at Fort Belvoir, "The Bricks" at Marine Corps Base Quantico, and The Towns at Clarendon each took home the top award in their categories.
"The Washington new homes market is one of the most competitive in the country," says Monument Awards chairman Larry Nordhauser. "The Monument Awards program is the most prestigious residential design competition in this market. Winning these awards translates into true value for the consumer."
The Villages at Fort Belvoir in Northern Virginia, winner of the Mixed Use Design award, boasts several military homes built above retail space. Situated at the heart of the base, this creates a "Main Street" atmosphere complete with a Welcome Center, Starbucks, a dry cleaner, and several other retail shops. Fort Belvoir is the first military installation to implement this popular private sector mixed-use concept on an Army post. In fact, Clark Realty's vision to create a sense of community for military personnel and their families is now being incorporated in Army posts across the country.
The Residential Historic Renovation award was given to the "The Bricks," a historically significant neighborhood originally built in the 1920s at MCB Quantico. When Clark Realty was awarded this project, "The Bricks," were initially slated for demolition. However after appealing to save the buildings, Clark Realty and its architect, Torti Gallas and Partners of Silver Spring, Md., transformed "The Bricks" from diminutive one- and two-bedroom stacked apartments into spacious three- and four-bedroom townhomes. The Quantico community now meets needs of the modern day military family while retaining its beautiful and historic brick facade, which gave the community its nickname.
"The Towns" at Clarendon earned the Rental Units - Midrise Award. The development's unique stepped-down architecture - from a 12-story high rise to a nine-story mid-rise to a four-story low-rise - creates a smooth visual transition between the big-city atmosphere of downtown Arlington and the quaint, suburban feel of the adjacent single-family homes. This apartment community, situated in a convenient location in downtown Clarendon, Va. combines sophisticated, urban design with elements of traditional townhome living.
"The nominated projects represent Clark Realty's commitment to innovative design, preservation and meeting contemporary needs of today's communities," said W. Cleve Johnson, managing director of Clark Realty Capital. "We are honored to once again be awarded by this influential organization."
The Monument Awards received over 200 entries ranging from townhomes and condominiums to high-end custom homes. Developments from rural Virginia to Annapolis were represented. This required extensive legwork for each judging team, which demonstrates that nominees were examined and discussed from every angle. The Monument Awards are open to all members of the Northern Virginia and Maryland-National Capital building industry associations, the educational arm, as well as the voice of builders, developers, real estate professionals, and others working to provide a variety of housing communities for area residents.
