Two Innovative Clark Projects Garner 2012 Awards at 49th Annual Ceremony

Fort Belvoir Wounded Warrior Home and the Flats at Atlas Recognized for Gold Nugget Awards
SAN FRANCISCO — At an awards ceremony last Wednesday, the Pacific Coast Builders Conference (PCBC) presented Clark Realty Capital (CRC) and Clark Builders Group (CBG) with two prestigious Gold Nugget Awards of Merit. Fort Belvoir's Wounded Warrior Patriot Home and the Flats at Atlas apartments in Washington, DC were each recognized among a group of over 456 national and international entries in 59 categories.

The Patriot Home earned a Judges Special Award of Excellence, which this year honored projects that fill an elemental necessity for our society: needs-based housing. An exemplary project for such recognition, the prototype single-family Patriot Home home aims to address the wide variety of physical and mental injuries afflicting our nation's growing number of active duty Wounded Warriors.

Judges commented, "This single-story home's yellow façade is ‘uniquely normal' and fits seamlessly within the surrounding Woodlawn Village neighborhood at Fort Belvoir. The home employs the principles of universal design to radically transform accessible housing — meeting the needs of deserving soldiers and functioning as a model for future homes."

Clark's first Gold Nugget win for a site plan, the Flats at Atlas won the Merit Award in the Infill Re-Development category. The Flats at Atlas created community using limited infill space on the former home of Washington DC's first Sears store in H Street Northeast. The Clark team set out to redevelop the area's largest brownfield, remediating the site and enrolling in The District's Department of the Environment's Voluntary Cleanup Program. Thanks to the team's extensive excavation work and re-engineering of its foundations system, the Flats now brings high-quality housing and amenities within a compact site plan to an area that has not benefited from new residential development in many years. The project incorporates modern style consistent with the surrounding area, as well as industrial façades that pay tribute to H Street's storied past.

"The Gold Nugget Award is a prestigious recognition for the Flats at Atlas," said Keith Anderson, president of Clark Builders Group. "This is a testament to CBG's commitment to quality and extensive considerations for this unique historic, urban infill site."

The oldest and most prestigious design and planning competition in the United States, the Gold Nugget Awards are now in their 49th year. Judging chairman Lisa Parrish noted, "With real estate development firmly on the upswing, [judges had] the opportunity to review the best in residential and commercial design and planning."
