AMC East Communities Earns Two 2010 Design and Development Grand Awards
LAS VEGAS and WASHINGTON, D.C. — Hanley Wood, the construction industry's leading media company, recognized Clark's housing at Air Mobility Command (AMC) East Communities this month for design/build and community excellence. The firm awarded Joint Base Andrews in Maryland with the Multifamily Executive (MFE) Military Project of the Year Grand Award in Las Vegas on October 5, and presented MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida with the Builder's Choice Grand Award for Single Family Community at an October 14th reception in Washington, D.C.

"Joint Base Andrews, just outside of Washington, D.C., takes military housing to new heights with a level of detail and durability combined with an amenity package unmatchable in the military housing sector," said Rachel Azoff, managing editor for Multifamily Executive magazine. "Each year, the MFE Awards judges are blown away by the military housing projects submitted by Clark Realty Capital, a repeat winner of the contest's Project of the Year: Military category."

One of the two installations in the AMC East six-year development partnership between Clark and the Air Force, Joint Base Andrews consists of 201 new residential homes and 214 renovations, numerous community amenities, and a central focus on walkability and community interaction. In developing Andrews, Clark carefully considered its target residents and designed a compact community with centrally located amenities to facilitate neighbor-to-neighbor bonds. The community is specifically tailored to make newcomers feel welcome, with special accommodations built into each home for the constant flux of residents; such as maximum durability wall treatments, wide stairwells, and added storage space.

"It's not easy to win a Builder's Choice award," noted Boyce Thompson, editorial director of Builder Magazine. "In this case, our judges were very impressed with what Clark had done to improve the housing stock and living conditions at MacDill—for officers as well as enlisted personnel."

MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida consists of 331 new single-family and duplex homes and provides the highest-grade amenities and community features for its hardworking officers and enlisted families. The Clark team conscientiously accommodated varying service member ranks by providing distinct central residences complete with heightened security features, coffered ceilings, and increased detailing. MacDill was also designed with attention to environment, and throughout the development process the project team took great care to preserve mature trees specific to the area's unique climate. Likewise, Clark employed architectural facades for each home to ensure that the project blended seamlessly with its surroundings. Clark's particular awareness of MacDill residents' needs serves as the framework for this well-planned, environmentally-sound neighborhood, which outrivaled its market-rate competition for the 2010 Builder's Choice Award.

"The AMC East project represents a successful multi-site housing development, and recognition from these two distinct organizations is a tribute to our thoughtful approach in designing both Andrews and MacDill as unique components under one overarching project," said Sean Callahan, development executive at Clark Realty Capital. "We are honored to accept these awards, and to earn recognition for our commitment to meeting the needs of AMC East Communities' residents."

Clark's special consideration for the unique needs of its military communities appropriately meets the MFE Awards criteria, which include suitability to the target market, innovation in architecture, and success in the marketplace. The Builder's Choice Awards honor innovation in land planning, curb appeal, landscaping, and compatibility with surrounding development.
